Bamboo makes a fast, beautiful privacy screen. The problem is the running varieties don't respect property lines. If you want to keep a stand of bamboo without it invading the rest of your yard or your neighbor's, containment is the answer.
The fix is a deep barrier that the rhizomes can't cross, installed around the planting and checked once a season.

Containment or removal?
Clumping bamboo barely spreads and usually needs only light edge pruning. Running bamboo is the one that escapes, and on a property line or in a small yard it should be contained even when a patio or wall sits next to it. Roots find cracks and slip underneath given time.
The method
How a proper root barrier works
We install high-density polyethylene (HDPE) barrier, 30 to 36 inches deep, vertically around the planting. We use 60 to 80 mil thickness, because the thinner stuff cracks in Northeast winters and bamboo grows straight through a crack. We leave a two-inch lip above the soil so any root trying to climb over is easy to spot. Installed right, one barrier seam can ring a large planting and last 20 to 30 years.
