If you have decided that a bamboo garden is right for you, properly caring for your bamboo and using the correct bamboo food is critical for your plants optimal growth and survival.
Before we go into detail make sure your bamboo is properly contained with a High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) barrier so that it doesn’t run rampant and destroy your property!
Feeding:
Before you even think about using bamboo food, wait three weeks before fertilizing your plants. Bamboo thrives with nitrogen rich fertilizers such as Green Green Bamboo Fertilizer.
If you plant your bamboo between October and December, use bamboo food sparingly and then reapply it again in February. If you plant your bamboo from February to September feel free to use bamboo food liberally. In growing season (February through September) bamboo enjoys a lot of food so do not be afraid to feed it!
If you miss a feeding or watering period, do not worry too much. Bamboo is very resilient and can tolerate changing conditions, however, don’t starve your bamboo plants or they will eventually die.
Watering:
Like many plants, bamboo enjoy a nice watering when the soil starts to dry up. If your bamboo is potted it is imperative that you check daily for any dryness of the soil.
For planted bamboo, it must be watered every couple of hours when it is freshly planted to ensure that all of the soil around it becomes saturated.
After that, planted and potted bamboo needs to be watered about once a week.
Warning:
If the leaves of your bamboo plant ever begin to curl up or discolor, water it immediately! This is signaling that your plant is dehydrated and needs water as soon as possible.
